How We Test

Our testing is systems-first: we evaluate each light as part of a complete campsite kit. Instead of asking “Is this lantern bright?” we ask, “Does this lantern, at this setting and tint, mesh with your headlamp, path markers, and power plan to create comfortable, glare-free light for the entire trip?”

Lab Tools and Calibration

  • Photometrics: integrating devices and calibrated sensors for lumen and lux; beamshots at standardized distances; spill and hotspot characterization.
  • Color: CCT, CRI (Ra/R9), and TM‑30 metrics; duv/tint shift for warmth and comfort.
  • Power: USB‑C PD handshake verification, charge rates, capacity tests on 18650/21700 cells, and mAh-to-runtime correlation at specific modes.

Field Validation

We validate in rain, cold, wind, and real group sizes. We assess mounting, diffusion, and shielding (hooks, magnets, tripods, shades, beam caps) to achieve even, low-glare light that respects neighbors and the night sky. Kits must be intuitive to deploy, consistent in UI, and reliable with lockouts and fast access to low/red.

What We Measure

  • Usability: mode spacing, memory, lockout, red/amber access, and one-cable charging.
  • Runtime: verified timelines at named modes with 20–30% reserve targets; thermal behavior and step-downs.
  • Durability: IP ratings, drop survivability, weather resistance, and serviceability (replaceable cells/parts).
  • Dark-sky impact: shielding options, dimming depth, beam control, and etiquette factors.

Scoring and Recommendations

We publish scenario-based picks (ultralight, family basecamp, overlanding, education programs) and build matched kits that align beam patterns, color temperature, and power budgets. Recommendations must pass both lab thresholds and field usability. When two products perform similarly, we choose the option that lowers total system weight, power draw, and skyglow.

Retests and Updates

We revisit reviews after firmware or hardware changes, update runtime graphs and power math, and flag any regressions. Samples from brands, reader loans, and retail purchases all follow the same process. No pay-to-play—ever.
